Red wine - Penedès

Red wines from Penedès are particularly known for the local grape varieties that give the wine a unique character and connection to the region. Two of the most prominent local grapes in Penedès are Xarel·lo and Sumoll , which help create wines with an authentic and local flavor profile.

Sumoll is a traditional Catalan grape that has been grown in Penedès for centuries. This grape produces red wines that are fresh, light and fruity with notes of red berries, spices and herbal undertones. Sumoll wines are often elegant and well-balanced, making them perfect for light meat dishes, grilled vegetables or tapas.

Xarel lo is usually better known for its use in sparkling wines such as Cava, but in Penedès it is also grown as a red wine grape. Xarel lo red wines have a fresh and fruity profile, often with notes of cherry and strawberry, and a slightly spicy undertone. Xarel lo wines from Penedès are generally lighter and more accessible, making them ideal for both a more casual dinner and as an aperitif.

Although Tempranillo and Garnacha are also grown in the region, local grapes such as Sumoll and Xarel·lo have a special place in wine production, giving the wines an authentic touch that reflects the unique terroir of Penedès.
